Green Stuff

I love food.

But I have a love-hate relationship with vegetables.

I love to go to the farmer’s market in the summer and go absolutely crazy buying fresh produce. Then I get it home and wonder…what am I going to do with this? Somehow, my end products aren’t as exciting as the whole veggies themselves.

But yesterday, I was leafing through a magazine, wallowing in vegetable guilt, when I noticed a recipe for a “Glowing Green Smoothie.” I decided, what the heck, I’ll try it. I should have more vegetables anyway. So after going to the grocery store on my way home, I ended up with this in my kitchen.

Yeah, that’s a blender full of spinach. I like spinach…usually accompanied by crumbled up bacon and lightly coated with some kind of high-calorie dressing. Or in a dip with artichokes and creamy cheese. I don’t usually say, “Hey, look! A bunch of spinach. Boy, am I thirsty!”

And to make it even weirder, I soon had this in my kitchen:

Mmmm. Lettuce in spinach juice. This seriously gets weirder and weirder. Also thrown in: an apple, a pear, and a banana, the juice from half a lemon, and some agave nectar, because I am a pansy about green beverages (except for green tea).  What I ended up with is VERY green.

On the bright side, now I can have a steak and baked potato for dinner and feel perfectly virtuous about eating a delicious, fattening Caesar salad instead of the side of steamed vegetables. Yay!
