Cactus & Chocolates

Last weekend, my beloved and I went to Las Vegas. And since we were on a low-budget vacation, we looked for some cheap things to do before dinner & shows in the evenings.

We found several, but my favorite was a tour of the factory where they make the delicious and preservative-free Ethel’s Chocolate. I am rather a big fan of chocolate. In fact, I meant to take a picture of the chocolate for this blog, but I ate it first. All of it. Yup.

You know what else I like? Cacti.

And guess what?

There was a cactus botanical garden right next to the chocolate factory. Sweeeeeeet. Cactus & chocolates.

Agave plants…Sean was excited to learn that this is the species of plant from whence tequila is derived.

These good-looking folks are some of the friends who went to Vegas with us. Hi Kim! Hi Sara! Hi Levy!

I like flowers. Especially when they are on a well-lit barrel cactus. But seriously…how beautiful are those flowers, nestled in there with all the spines? GORGEOUS.

This lonely little joshua tree reminds me of Dr. Seuss’s book “The Lorax” for some reason. But then again, I may be losing my marbles.

However, there can be no argument that this cactus looks like a slightly spiny, off-color starfruit.

No, I did not taste it. How dumb do you think I am?

Fine. I may have accidentally touched it just a little to see if it’s as soft as it looks.

It wasn’t.

This was one of the beautiful trees in the garden. I’m a sucker for a good climbing tree, and this one looks like a doozie. But since I’m a grown-up, and there were spiky cacti between me and the trunk, I did not climb it. Not that I didn’t think about it!

This purple and green prickly pear variety was one of my favorites. Every time I see anything purple, I think of my mom. Hi Mom! Aren’t you glad that strangely-colored cacti remind me of you! Not that you’re at all cactus-like.

This was one of my favorite things in the entire garden. How beautiful is that? Such a perfect fan. I want to plant those all around my house. Stupid cold weather, keeping me from having cacti all over my lawn! That’d teach those pesky neighbor kids to stop running through my damn front yard. HA. Trip and fall in my yard and you get a faceful of spikes.

Anyway…yay cactus! Yay chocolate! Yay weekend vacations to Las Vegas!

Peace, love, and cacti,

Sumiko
