Lucky

Last night, my beautiful sister-in-law married her handsome fiance.

When I was younger, I really didn’t like weddings. I’m pretty sure I applied adjectives such as:

  • cheesy
  • complete waste of time
  • boring
  • ridiculous
  • stupid reason to get dressed up

…and for all of those, I would now like to apologize. Because now that I am old and boring and married too, I see a lot more significance to weddings. No matter how short or long the ceremony or what amusing/annoying mishaps occur during the reception, I love watching the sheer joy on everyone’s faces as the couple sets out on a shared journey. I love watching the old married couples look at each other with love in their eyes, maybe remembering their own wedding days and all the intervening years. I love looking over at my sweetie and thinking about our wedding day and how I couldn’t stop grinning, which annoyed the photographer as she was trying to get “serious” pictures. Sorry…I don’t really do “serious” pictures, especially not on the happiest day of my life (so far)!

Coincidentally, this morning a link popped up on my Facebook news feed, from my favorite author (John Steinbeck) about falling in love. It’s beautiful and tender and wise, and it made me feel even luckier to have been part of the newlywed’s celebration last night, and infinitely lucky to have found a man whom I am firmly convinced is The Greatest Guy EVER.

So: cheers to the happy couple, Christina & Alex! And cheers to everyone else out there who has been so lucky, now or ever in the past. I sincerely hope and work towards a day in the future when any couples who are in love gets to experience this, too.

Love, peace, and luck,
Sumiko
